NEW PREDICTIONS FOR THE SOLAR ECLIPSE: Next Monday, Aug. 21st, the Moon will pass directly in front of the sun producing an historic solar eclipse over the USA.  Millions of people inside the path of totality will catch a glimpse of the sun's gossamer outer atmosphere, the corona. In centuries past, the appearance of the corona was unpredictable from one eclipse to the next. But now researchers have developed supercomputer codes to forecast its shape.

"RING OF FIRE" SOLAR ECLIPSE: Something strange is about to happen to sunbeams in the southern hemisphere. On Sunday, Feb. 26th, the Moon will pass directly in front of the sun, covering as much as 99% of the solar disk.  This will turn the sun into a "ring of fire" over parts of South America and Africa. Crescent-shaped sunbeams and thin rings of light will dance across the ground of more than a dozen countries.

AURORA SEASON BEGINS:  For reasons researchers still don't fully understand, auroras love equinoxes. ARCTIC ECLIPSE: On March 20th, the first day of northern spring, Arctic sky watchers could witness something rare and wonderful:  Northern Lights during a total eclipse of the sun.  Earth's magnetic field is reverberating from a CME strike on March 17th that sparked the strongest geomagnetic storm of the current solar cycle.  Days after the impact, auroras are still dancing around the Arctic Circle.  Those auroras could emerge in "broad daylight" this Friday when the new Moon passes in front of the Arctic sun, producing a total eclipse visible from Svalbard, the Faroe Islands, and many ships at sea.
