Spooky Eclipse of the Harvest Moon

Source - Space Weather News for Sept. 15, 2016: http://spaceweather.com

SPOOKY ECLIPSE OF THE HARVEST MOON:  According to folklore, this Friday's full Moon is the Harvest Moon.  For many observers, the usual luster of the silver orb will be dimmed by a spooky shadow as the Moon experiences a "penumbral lunar eclipse."

Visit http://spaceweather.com for visibility maps and a cool animation.

EARTH'S MAGNETIC FIELD CAUGHT RINGING LIKE A BELL:  This week a magnetic observatory in Norway recorded almost pure sinusoidal oscillations in Earth's magnetic field--a phenomenon unlike normal geomagnetic storms. The magnetic "ringing" was accompanied by equally sinusoidal electric currents flowing through the ground. The data and underlying physics are highlighted on today's edition of http://spaceweather.com.

Asteroid buzzes Earth, then flies by the Moon

Source - Space Weather News for Sept. 7, 2016: http://spaceweather.com

ASTEROID DOUBLE FLYBY:  On Sept. 7th, a newly discovered asteroid about the size of a large grey whale flew over the south pole of Earth only 25,000 miles away. For scale, that's only a few thousand miles above the orbits of typical geosynchronous satellites. After the Earth flyby, the space rock turned and headed in the general direction of the Moon, executing a wider flyby of 179,000 miles on Sept. 8th. Where will this asteroid go next?  Visit http://spaceweather.com for answers and photos of today's encounter with Earth.

BRIGHT AURORAS:  A broad solar wind stream hit Earth on Sept. 1st, sparking a display of bright auroras around the Arctic Circle that is only now fully subsiding.  Did you miss it?  Browse our Aurora Photo Gallery for highlights.

The UN Braces for Stormy Space Weather

Source - NASA Science News for Feb. 13, 2013

Forecasters say solar maximum is due in 2013. To prepare, the United Nations is taking steps to organize an international response to stormy space weather.

From the article: "Space weather might play a role in Earth’s climate, too.  For example, the Maunder minimum, a 70-year period almost devoid of sunspots in the late 17th to early 18th century, coincided with prolonged, very cold winters in the northern hemisphere.  Researchers are increasingly convinced that variations in solar activity have regional effects on climate and weather that pay no attention to national boundaries, and thus can only be studied in meaningful detail by international consortia."

Double CME Hits Earth, Sparks Auroras

Source - Space Weather News for June 17, 2012: http://spaceweather.com

As predicted, a double CME hit Earth's magnetic field on June 16th.  The impact strongly compressed Earth's magnetosphere, exposing geosynchronous satellites to solar wind plasma and sparking more than 24 hours of geomagnetic storms.  (The storms are still in progress as this alert is being written during the middle hours of June 17th.) In the United States, Northern Lights have descended as far south as Wisconsin, Washington, Minnesota, and the Dakotas.  Southern hemisphere observers are also reporting colorful aurora australis.  Check http://spaceweather.com for photos and updates.

Kepler Confirms First Planet in Habitable Zone of Sun-like Star

Source - NASA Science News for Dec. 5, 2011

In a significant milestone on the road to finding Earth's "twin" elsewhere in the galaxy, NASA's Kepler mission has confirmed its first planet in the habitable zone of a distant sun-like star.

FULL STORY at http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2011/05dec_firstplanet/

Kepler-22b -- Comfortably Circling within the Habitable Zone

Kepler's First Planet (layout, 558px)

"This diagram compares our own solar system to Kepler-22, a star system containing the first "habitable zone" planet discovered by NASA's Kepler mission. The habitable zone is the sweet spot around a star where temperatures are right for water to exist in its liquid form. Liquid water is essential for life on Earth.

Kepler-22's star is a bit smaller than our sun, so its habitable zone is slightly closer in. The diagram shows an artist's rendering of the planet comfortably orbiting within the habitable zone, similar to where Earth circles the sun. Kepler-22b has a yearly orbit of 289 days. The planet is the smallest known to orbit in the middle of the habitable zone of a sun-like star. It's about 2.4 times the size of Earth."
